Bali - Schapelle Corby, the last days in Hotel K?

The Justice Ministry of Bali announced yesterday afternoon it had signed parole papers, bringing drug convict Schapelle Corby one step closer to release.

The consideration is that Corby has fulfilled a substantive requirement, which is she has served two-thirds of her sentence and behaved well. The documents now go to the office of the Director-General of prisons in Jakarta where another hearing will determine her future. Based on previous experience, the answer of approval or rejection to parole should be received within 12 days after the documents are received by the Prisons Director-General. The final decision will be made by Indonesia’s Justice Minister, Amir Syamsuddin, who told that he does not believe there are any impediments to prevent her early release on parole. He continued that his decision would not be affected by critics, including anti-drug activists and some politicians.

The issue of her immigration status also appears to have been resolved. A letter was send to the Immigration Directorate-General to ensure that Corby’s stay permit will be issued once she’s released from prison. At this stage, a stay permit for the convicted drug smuggler should merely be a formality.
