New cruise port in North Bali

The Bali Transportation, Information and Communication Department had declared the Province plans to build an international cruise port in North Bali’s Buleleng Regency at Lovina. Ketut Dana from the Bali Transportation, Information and Communication Department said, “We see the potential of cruise ships berthing in Lovina because of the area’s reputation as one of the best tourist area in North Bali.’ He said his department was in the midst of surveying the area and examining the condition of a pier at Lovina to weigh the feasibility of a cruise port.

The first step must be to renovate the existing pier in order that is can be used as a jetty. “We have heard that the pier is never used for a number of reasons, including the subject pier is too high,” he explained. Dana refused to be pinned down on when a cruise port might be built in Lovina, insisting the project was still only in the feasibility study phase. Dana explained that the Province had only recently assumed control over shipping and shoreline matters under a 2014 law issued by the Minister for the Department of the Interior, transferring this responsibility once held by the Regency of Buleleng. He explained that the use of the Port at Celukan Bawang in North Bali for cruise ships was not in accordance with the master and zoning plan for the Province and Buleleng. Dana insists that the Celukan Bawang Port is designated only for cargo ship operations.
